RAIMUNDO DE MADRAZO

Raimundo de Madrazo is a pivotal work for understanding the evolution of realism in 19th-century painting, focusing on the figure of painter Raimundo de Madrazo y Garreta (Rome, 1841 – Versailles, 1920). Son of fellow painter Federico de Madrazo and grandson of José de Madrazo, he belonged to one of Spain's most influential artistic dynasties. Trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and in Paris under the tutelage of Léon Cogniet, he developed a career that established him as one of the most sought-after portraitists of the Parisian and American high society.

This catalog, published by Fundación MAPFRE, offers a comprehensive view of his work, ranging from genre painting to portraiture, highlighting his mastery in depicting interiors and his refined use of color. The publication coincides with the exhibition organized by Fundación MAPFRE and the Meadows Museum in Dallas, presenting over a hundred of his most significant works, thus recovering Madrazo's figure from the critical oblivion it suffered during the 20th century.
