Guernica was painted by Pablo Picasso in 1937 for the Pavilion of the Spanish Republic at the International Exposition in Paris. After a long period in which the work remained deposited in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, its arrival in Spain in 1981 had a transcendental significance during the transition to democracy.
