Who is Léon Spilliaert ?
Son of a perfumer in Ostend, Léon works in the family home. At the time, Ostend is a fancy seaside resort: with grand restaurants, beaches, dykes, lighthouses, bathers, casinos, and thermal baths. King Léopold II stays there as well and constructs monumental architecture.
The artist suffers from stomach pains and wanders alone at night. He finds his inspiration in his nocturnal walks.
