Catalogue of the first Context exhibition, on the topic of religious art in the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection, held at the museum in 2013.
Ranging from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century, this show gave visitors the opportunity to enjoy Simone Martini's splendid St. Peter (1326), works by Rubinetto di Francia, Niccolò Frangipane and Alfred Dehodencq, and the creations of other masters of European art, such as Anthony van Dyck's Christ on the Cross (ca. 1627) and Gauguin's Sketch for "The Yellow Christ". Thus, the exhibition explored the symbols and iconographies of the sacred as well as a broad spectrum of influential art styles such as the Italian Trecento, Flemish painting and Spanish costumbrismo or genre painting.
The catalogue contains commentaries on each work, written by renowned experts, details of their provenance, exhibition history and bibliography, and brief biographies of the featured artists.
